From Chaos to a Beautiful Macrame Journey
Three months after my first child was born, life took an unexpected turn. I was confronted with postpartum depression, a challenge I never anticipated. Simultaneously, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. These twin burdens overwhelmed me, leading to the difficult decision to leave my career and focus on raising my child.
"I had put my heart and soul into my college studies and career to land a great job. My hard work paid off, securing me roles at prestigious agencies like McCann, Ulka, and JWT Contracts Limited, where I thrived as a creative director. So, when the time came to leave it all behind, the decision was heartbreaking. I found myself questioning, 'Why me?' I had worked so hard, and my parents had invested so much in my education. It felt like I was tossing everything away."
During this turmoil, I felt deeply lost, agitated, and constantly on edge. There were moments when I couldn't even bear to hear my own baby's cry. I felt like I was falling apart inside, unsure of how to find myself again. I knew this wasn't who I truly was—I had always been energetic and fun-loving. I needed to pull myself out of this darkness, and during this chaos, I rediscovered an old passion—macrame art.
Creating beautiful macrame pieces, such as kids' nameplates and leaf wall hangings, became my therapy. The simple act of weaving fibers together brought me peace and purpose, helping me regain my sense of self. As days turned into weeks, our home transformed into a gallery of macrame art. My relatives couldn't help but admire my work. Encouraged by their support, I started taking custom orders and soon realized how much joy this brought me.
This personal journey inspired me to share my passion with a wider audience, leading to the creation of my Instagram page, @Dhaagewali (previously @tinytwisted). And that's how your beloved Dhaagewali brand was born.
The Purpose Behind Dhaagewali
The true success of Dhaagewali lies in the connections we've made along the way. Many of our followers are mothers who face challenges similar to those I once encountered. They find strength in my journey, and one of the most rewarding aspects is that they love seeing my children featured on our page.
Recognizing the power of art to heal, I decided to bring macrame art to those who, like me, might be searching for a way to cope with life’s challenges. To help others discover their creative potential, I created a\workshop on macrame art. You can access the course here.
"I believe that bonds formed through shared creativity keep us going and inspire us to bring vibrancy and innovation to the world of art."
Before Dhaagewali, finding all the necessary macrame cords and tools was a challenge for artists. There wasn’t a single dedicated store for these materials. So, we took it upon ourselves to bring all the macrame supplies together in one place. We scoured the markets of Delhi and Rajasthan to find the most beautiful cords and tools for all the creative souls out there.
Empowering Through Art
Today, Dhaagewali has grown into a thriving business. We’ve delivered hundreds of macrame products, including macrame wall hangings, nameplates, and macrame dreamcatchers, to boho decor lovers and macrame artists. Dhaagewali now employs more than 20 women, and we’ve reached new heights, earning Rs 56 lakh in the past two years.
Our work has caught the attention of celebrities like Taapsee Pannu, and we've completed orders for prestigious clients, including major hotels like Airbnb. We collaborate with interior designers and individuals across the country to create custom macrame works for homes and businesses. To learn more about our custom orders, visit this webpage.
It is my children and every member of Dhaagewali who keep me going, reminding me every day that what started as a way to cope with anxiety has grown into a fulfilling and prosperous business.
